This bridge-road-rail infrastructure (BRR) is one of the flagship projects of the African Union (AU) designed within the framework of the new partnership for the development of Africa (NEPAD) which places particular emphasis on the need develop trans-African road networks, including the Tripoli – Windhoek corridor. The Congo River crossing between the two capitals Brazzaville and Kinshasa represents one of the main links in this corridor
The project is to connect the two banks of the Congo river up to the two closest capitals in the world, Brazzaville and Kinshasa, separated by the river by only 4 kilometers, by the construction of a 1,575 m Road-Rail Bridge intended to ensure the passage of automobile and rail traffic under optimal conditions of safety and economy
The road rail bridge has been designed to be easy to maintain and operate and will focus more specifically on:
° a roadway with two lanes of traffic with the possibility of extension to 4 lanes as well as two sidewalks,
° a railway track.
The implementation of the project will:
° improve and secure connections between Brazzaville-Kinshasa and seaports,
° to promote exchanges between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo,
° to encourage exchanges between the Democratic Republic of Congo on the one hand and Cameroon and Gabon on the other.
